At LilypadProjectss, we discuss everything and anything relating to menstruation. So, what is PCOS?

PCOS is an abbreviation for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. Just maybe Polycystic Ovary Syndrome does not sound like anything so good to discuss but please note also it’s nothing shameful to discuss.

PCOS is a common health problem that can affect teen girls and young women. It occurs in 5% – 10% of women between the age of 15- 44 years old. The key sign of PCOS is irregular periods or missed period

The symptoms of PCOS tend to run in families, the syndrome is probably caused at least in part by a change or mutation in one or more genes. PCOS cannot be diagnosed until 2-3 years after a girl’s first menstrual cycle because it can take up to 2-3 years after her first period for any cycle to become regular. As stated earlier, PCOS can cause irregular menstrual periods i.e. having periods that may occur more than 35 days apart), make periods heavier or even make periods stop.

The good news is that PCOS can be controlled even though there is no cure for it yet.PCOS should be controlled on time because failure to do so can lead to infertility and type 1 diabetes. Controlling PCOS would include avoiding stress, eating a balanced diet, regular exercise and you may want to consult your doctor for more help.

Again, at LilyPad Projects, our goal remains that you stay confident, healthy and joyful while on your menstruation. It’s what we are best at. Cheers to confident and healthy you!
